This lovely kokeshi by Sekiguchi Toshio (関口俊夫) is titled Soushunfu (早春賦) which means Early Spring Wind in English.
She is egg-shaped but unlike rigid traditional styles with strictly cylindrical bodies, this piece highlights a hallmark trait of award-winning artisan Toshio Sekiguchi, fluid, unconventional geometries. The form is carved into a smooth, weighted egg shape (or pebble shape) with curved contours.
The kimono is highly detailed, combining earthy olive-green, textured stippling, and a warm, glowing gold-leaf glitter overlay across the chest. Stylized spring flower silhouettes (resembling camellias or plum blossoms) are painted over the textured garment. One blossom pops in deep red and a smaller counterpart sits below it in ivory-white. Both are defined with bold black outlines.
True to Sekiguchi’s gentle signature aesthetic, the face is minimalist yet peaceful. It features narrow, slanted closed eyes, light ink eyelashes, and a bright red, crescent-shaped mouth.
